The President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, called on Christians across the country to embrace the solemn season of Lent through prayer, fasting and reflection.

In a statement issued on his official page to mark Ash Wednesday, President Bio said the day signals the beginning of the 40-day Lenten season, a sacred period in the Christian calendar.

“Today, February 18, 2026, on Ash Wednesday, we commence the solemn season of Lent,” the President stated.

He described Lent as a time when Christians are encouraged to pray, fast, read the Bible and reflect deeply on God’s love. According to him, the period offers an opportunity for spiritual growth and renewed faith.

“For Christians, Lent is a period to pray, fast, read the Bible, and reflect on God’s love. When we seek Him with humble hearts, we shall find Him,” President Bio said in his message.

The President also linked the observance of Lent to national unity and social responsibility. He expressed hope that the season would inspire citizens to care more for one another and promote harmony across the country.

“As we observe these forty days, may our personal renewal deepen our care for one another, and may God strengthen love and peace across our nation,” he added.

Lent is widely observed by Christians around the world and is traditionally marked by repentance, sacrifice and spiritual reflection in preparation for Easter.

President Bio’s message places emphasis on faith, humility and the need for love and peace during the season.
