President Julius Maada Bio has congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his election as the new leader of the Catholic Church.

In a message shared on social media, President Bio expressed his support for the new pope, praising his strong faith and commitment to the Church.

“His steadfast faith and dedication inspire us all,” President Bio wrote. “We stand in prayerful support as he guides the Church with wisdom and grace. May his papacy bring unity, compassion, and hope to the world.”

Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, was elected as pope on May 8, 2025, after the death of Pope Francis. He is the first pope from the United States, the first pope from Peru, and the first pope from the Order of Saint Augustine.

Pope Leo XIV’s journey in the Church includes years of service in Peru, where he worked as a parish pastor and held other important roles. He later served as Bishop of Chiclayo before taking a leadership role in the Vatican.

Sierra Leone’s Catholic community has shown great interest in the election of Pope Leo XIV, especially since the Church plays an important role in the country’s education and healthcare.

President Bio’s message reflects the country’s hope for a continued partnership with the Church under the pope’s guidance.

Pope Leo XIV’s ability to speak multiple languages, including English, Spanish, and Italian, is expected to help him connect with people around the world as he leads the Catholic Church.
