A member of the All People’s Congress (APC) Publicity Secretariat, Minkailu Koroma, says President Julius Maada Bio should have declined the appointment as Chairman of ECOWAS, arguing that the country is already under serious economic and political pressure.

Speaking during a media program, Koroma said the appointment comes with both advantages and disadvantages, but that the president should have considered Sierra Leone’s current situation before accepting it.

He said the burden on the country is already too much, and taking on this role only adds more. According to him, the president could have looked at how difficult things are and chosen to decline. He added that it is not a crime to do so, since the ECOWAS chairmanship is a rotational position.

Koroma also said it is not about whether the president is comfortable with the role, but whether the people are. He explained that democracy and governance are about making decisions that reflect the needs and conditions of the public.

He further warned that the appointment brings not only economic pressure, but also a political one. With ECOWAS currently divided, and countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Guinea having stepped away from the group, Koroma said the president is now faced with an even more difficult task.

He said leading a divided regional body in a time of economic struggle could bring more pressure to Sierra Leone.
