The mortal remains of the late Bishop Emeritus George Biguzi has been laid to rest in Makeni on Monday 15th July 2024.

This marks the beginning of a solemn day of mourning for the former spiritual head of the Catholic Diocese of Makeni prior his burial on Monday 15th July 2024. His call to be flown in the country for interment was honoured in fulfillment of his desire whilst he was alive.

The body of the late Bishop Emeritus was briefly sojourned at the Bombali District Council’s compound, where the Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, Amb. John Sylvanus Tamba Lamina, Paramount Chiefs and other local authorities stood to pay him tribute.

The Mayor of the Makeni City Council said Bishop Emeritus Biguzzi would continue to live in the lives of those he impacted in Makeni and its environs.

“I have consulted my Council members and other citizens, so we name a street after him in the city as a remembrance of him,” Mayor Kamara avowed.

And that citizens were willing to give more than what they offered.

Bishop Biguzzi had always expressed a desire to be laid to rest in Makeni, northern Sierra Leone, where he dedicated many decades of his life to serving the Catholic Church and the local community.

Beyond his religious duties, Bishop Biguzzi played a significant role in Sierra Leone’s history. Additionally, Bishop Biguzzi was a pivotal figure in the establishment of the University of Makeni (UNIMAK), the first university in northern Sierra Leone, further cementing his legacy in the region’s educational and social development.

Bishop Emeritus George Biguzzi served as second Bishop from 6th January, 1987–7th January, 2012 in the Makeni Diocese. He served as Bishop for twenty-five years.
