In response to rising concerns over the abuse of kush, a highly potent and addictive drug, Bo District is intensifying its efforts to combat substance abuse and promote community health. Dr. Amara Stevens Ngegbai, District Medical Officer and deputy head of Bo’s task force on drugs, recently announced that a new rehabilitation center is nearing completion in Gondama, Tikonko Chiefdom.
The facility, set to open soon, aims to provide essential medical and psychosocial support to individuals struggling with kush addiction, offering pathways for recovery and reintegration. This center is part of President Julius Maada Bio’s broader national strategy to address drug abuse and reinforce public health systems.
Alongside its anti-drug initiatives, Bo District marked One Health Day on November 3, 2024, celebrating a holistic approach to health that integrates human, animal, and environmental wellbeing. Festivities commenced with a symbolic football match at the UCC field, where representatives from animal health, environmental protection, and healthcare sectors faced off. The spirited game ended in a 3-3 draw, symbolizing the teamwork required to confront shared public health challenges.
The district’s One Health outreach continued on November 4, when officials visited Methodist High School in Bo City to educate students about the interconnections between human, animal, and environmental health. Led by District Extension Officer Mr. Mansary, the delegation included District Livestock Officer Mr. Kailie, EPA representative Paul Banister, Health Education Officer Peter Safa, and One Health Focal Person Abdulai Conteh. Presentations focused on the theme “Taking One Health into the Community,” emphasizing the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration to address complex health issues.
These initiatives underscore Bo District’s commitment to addressing substance abuse while advancing public understanding of health as a shared responsibility. By combining drug intervention programs with community-centered health education, Bo District is strengthening its foundation for a healthier, more resilient future.
