At least two person has been confirmed dead and several others critically injured after a private vehicle lost control and plunged into a crowd gathered for a football gala in Looking Town, Kissy community, on Saturday evening, February 28, 2026.
Eyewitnesses reported that the Toyota Highlander was attempting to climb a hill when it suddenly halted, reversed uncontrollably, and struck spectators standing on a nearby bridge before careening into the football field where supporters were awaiting the kickoff of the competition.
Mohamed Kanu, one of the first volunteers at the scene, described the chaotic rescue efforts. “We pulled one young boy, between the age of 5 and 10, from under the car – he was already dead,” Kanu said. He added that several other victims were rushed to hospital, many in critical condition.
Sierraeye observed a distraught woman rolling on the ground at the accident site. Relatives told the outlet that her two children were among those caught in the crash, though their condition remained unclear.
This event is not isolated. Sierraeye was told that sometime last year, two similar incidents happened at the same place but no casualty was reported. The people this outlet spoke to also attributed to vehicles trying to climb the hill and suddenly halted.
Police responded swiftly but were unable to immediately confirm the number of casualties or provide details on the injured. Families expressed growing concern as many did not know which health facilities their loved ones had been taken to.
The tragic incident has made the residents worry over the Looking Town bridge, turning what was meant to be a joyful sporting occasion into a night of grief and uncertainty.
