The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, is actively participating in the ongoing Declaration of Rights process for the Paramount Chieftaincy election in Imperi Chiefdom.

The exercise, which is taking place at the Kpangbama Belleh Town Court Barray, marks a major stage in the traditional leadership selection process. Nine aspirants are currently presenting their lineage claims for consideration as part of the requirements for contesting the chieftaincy position.

ECSL has deployed a high-level delegation to oversee the process, led by Commissioner Alex Pat Labib Saffa. The Commission stated that its presence is to ensure that the proceedings adhere to established electoral standards, reinforcing credibility and transparency in the exercise.

The atmosphere at the venue has remained peaceful and orderly since the start of the process. Officers of the Sierra Leone Police are maintaining a professional presence, providing security while ensuring that the cultural integrity of the traditional proceedings is respected.

According to ECSL, the Commission’s leadership is also expected to make a stopover during the exercise, a move seen as further demonstration of its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and accountability in all electoral-related activities.

The Declaration of Rights process is a critical step in Paramount Chieftaincy elections, as it establishes the legitimacy of candidates through verification of their lineage and eligibility to contest.

ECSL reaffirmed its role in supporting credible electoral processes across the country, including traditional leadership elections, as part of its broader mandate to uphold democratic governance in Sierra Leone.
