Inspector General of Police (IGP), William Fayai Sellu, has emphasized the Sierra Leone Police Force’s commitment to maintaining security and fostering diplomatic collaboration during a press briefing organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education on Tuesday.

Addressing journalists, IGP Sellu disclosed that the Guinean Ambassador recently visited him at his George Street office to discuss critical security matters, noting a cordial working relationship. He also mentioned plans for an upcoming visit by the Nigerian Ambassador as the police currently detain 20 Nigerian nationals on charges of illegal activities.

Highlighting the aftermath of the August 10 unrest, IGP Sellu outlined efforts to improve security in the capital, including the deployment of 36 surveillance cameras under the ‘Smart TV’ initiative, a project introduced by President Julius Maada Bio. “The cameras are strategically placed to monitor illegal activities and maintain peace in Freetown,” he said. Additionally, drones and GPS tracking systems are being employed to enhance operational efficiency and response times.

IGP Sellu revealed that 113 Guineans arrested for involvement in Qnet-related online activities were repatriated in collaboration with the Guinean Embassy. The Community Relations Department of the police continues to disseminate security awareness messages across the city.

In a separate contribution, Abdulai Caulker, National Coordinator of the Office of National Security (ONS), reported that recent raids in Kenema led to the arrest of over 80 foreigners, including Zimbabweans, Malawians, Kenyans, and Angolans, for various illegal operations. Caulker emphasized the security sector’s focus on ensuring peace and stability in Sierra Leone, asserting that all actions are conducted within the framework of the country’s constitution.

The security leaders jointly criticized misinterpretations of their operations, clarifying that their efforts target criminal activities and illegal operations to protect law and order.

Both officials reaffirmed their commitment to a stable and secure environment where citizens can conduct their activities without hindrance.
