President Julius Maada Bio’s announcement of the Population and Housing Census, initially set for December 1, 2025, has now been postponed to December 2026.

Statistics Sierra Leone, the institution responsible for organising the census, cited unresolved issues in the preparations as the reason for the delay.

The decision to postpone the census has led to strong reactions, with Abdul Karim Kamara, the Publicity Secretary of the All People’s Congress (APC), criticizing the move as a disservice to the country. Kamara questioned the reasons for the delay and voiced his disappointment in an interview.

Abdul Karim Kamara stated that the delay was due to challenges in completing the necessary preparations for the census. Despite this, President Bio had been assured earlier that everything would be on track for the 2025 date. However, some individuals within the same institution later provided conflicting information, leading to the postponement.

In September 2024, President Bio announced the scheduled date for the Population and Housing Census, set for December 1, 2025. During this announcement, he expressed confidence that all necessary preparations for the census had been finalized. However, subsequent reports from certain individuals within the institution raised concerns by providing conflicting information regarding the state of these preparations. stating that the census would be delayed without providing clear justification.

Kamara criticized the officials involved, accusing them of failing to deliver the necessary services and transparency. He called their actions a disservice to both the President and the people of Sierra Leone, leaving many questioning the reliability of the institution in charge of conducting the national survey.
