There have been reports of chaos and unrest in some part of Freetown as commercial drivers staged a sit down strike due to perceived fuel shortage in the capital.
They expressed dissatisfaction over the recent increase in the price of fuel without consultation with the drivers union and this is making life unbearable for them.
There are reports of youth setting tires ablaze and putting up makeshift roadblocks around the Kissy PWD, Waterloo, Lumley and other areas across the capital.
“There is unrest around my area PWD Old road, Blackhall road, Taiwo Chandis area . Some young people protesting, blocked the road, pelting stones, using incentives against fuel dealers and the government. Police arrived at the scene, fired tear gas, removed barricade. Youths are back burning tyres,” Brima Sheriff formerly of the Human Rights Commission stated.
There are reports of trucks of riot police seen at Lumley, Cotton tree and several intersections across the municipality.
Meanwhile, the President of the Sierra Leone Motor Drivers and General Transportation Workers Union, Alpha Amadu Bah has called on commercial drivers in the city to put an end to the strike and resume their services.
