Sierra Leone recorded an alarming number of Road Accidents in the Year 2022 involving a lot of individuals in the Western Area and the Provinces.
Speaking on the causes of Road Accidents, Chief Inspector Edward Kamara – the Information Officer at the Traffic Directorate in Freetown Said, the causes are related to the three categories that are responsible for accidents ranging from Human errors, Mechanical errors, and the Environmental errors respectively.
Rolling out the statistics of the road crashes gathered in the data base from January to September 2022 he said, the first quarter spanning from January to March 2022 recorded a total number of 1,147 road crashes. Among this number, the fatality includes 107 cases, which involves 88 males and 19 female.
The second quarter spanning from April to June include 1,123 cases and among this number fatality was 95 cases, which involves 68 males and 27 females.
And the third quarter spanning from July to September include 1,193 cases and among this number fatality was 94 cases, which includes 63 males and 31 females.
‘’In March last year, we held a sensitization meeting in Makeni which involved all stakeholders in the transport sector to come together and discuss the way forward in mitigating the issues of crashes. Also in September 2022 we did same in Kenema and the last one was held in Port Loko on the 26th November, 2022.’’ He mentioned.
The reasons behind the meeting with key stakeholders in the transport sector was to get them involved and help the Police in enforcing certain road usage rules that will help minimize the too many records of accident without compromise, he disclosed.
