Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, has shared his unique experience of spending December 26, 2024, on a private boat ride with His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio.
The journey, which traversed the tip of Bonthe Island, provided insights into the President’s profound connection with Sierra Leone’s geography, its people, and nature.
Minister Bah described being impressed by the President’s in-depth knowledge of the island’s intricate geography, recounting how President Bio identified villages by name, shared historical anecdotes, and displayed an exceptional memory of the families from the area. “His intimate understanding of the island is remarkable,” Bah noted.
The excursion also revealed the President’s passion for nature. Bah highlighted that President Bio regularly spends weekends on farms and often takes ocean rides to immerse himself in the country’s natural beauty.
Equipped with binoculars, the President observed the landscapes and wildlife, expressing awe at the pristine beaches, calm waters, and the wild Atlantic Ocean beyond.
As the boat neared a remote island known as Barefoot Island, President Bio’s approachable leadership style became evident. Disembarking barefoot, he mingled with locals who gathered in celebration upon hearing of his arrival.
The President greeted everyone warmly, held conversations, joked with the crowd, and even held babies, cementing his status as a leader deeply loved by his people.
The visit, initially planned for fishing, ended with the delegation returning with a bowl of dried fish. On the return trip, President Bio shared memories of his childhood and his journey to the military, offering Minister Bah a glimpse into the life experiences that shaped his leadership.
Reflecting on the experience, Minister Bah said, “Today, I am in awe of a man at peace with nature and his people. Grateful for the privilege of learning from and witnessing the wisdom and charisma of President Bio.”
This rare glimpse into the President’s personal side showcases not only his connection to Sierra Leone’s natural environment but also his enduring commitment to fostering close relationships with the people he serves.

It’s great for us to see the honest human side of the great man. I can perceived he is a hard worker with little time for fun.
Finally we see those feet are okay.
