His Lordship Justice Komba Kamanda, the newly appointed Chief Justice, appeared before the Committee on Appointment and the Public Service for his parliamentary interview.
He was accompanied by the outgoing Acting Chief Justice, Honourable Justice Nicholas Browne-Marke, and other distinguished Justices of the superior Court of Judicature.
During the session, Justice Kamanda outlined his vision to transform the Judiciary into an independent and impartial institution dedicated to upholding justice, integrity, and the rule of law.
He emphasized his commitment to reforming the Judiciary to ensure its accessibility, efficiency, and accountability in delivering justice.
Addressing questions on the administration of Local Courts, Justice Kamanda explained that these courts were previously under the supervision of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.
However, he noted that the 2011 Local Courts Act transferred their administration to the Judiciary. He highlighted the need for a sectoral meeting to address challenges and improve the effectiveness of Local Courts, ensuring they serve communities more efficiently.
Hon. Mathew Nyuma, Leader of the Public Accounts Committee, concluded the session by commending the contributions of the outgoing Acting Chief Justice, Honourable Browne-Marke, particularly for his role in shaping the current Criminal Procedure Act of 2024.
The Public Account Committee, consisting of sixteen members, including Hon. Bashiru Siliki, Hon. Wuyata B. Songa, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, and Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara, played an active role in the interview process, reflecting their commitment to ensuring accountability in the judicial sector.
