The Economic and Commercial Counselor of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Sierra Leone, Mr. Wang Peng, has paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources Julius Daniel Mattai to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the country’s mining sector.
The meeting, held on Monday at the Ministry’s Conference Hall at the Youyi Building in Freetown, focused on deepening collaboration between Sierra Leone and China in mining development, sustainable mineral management, and international trade.

Discussions also reviewed progress from the G20 International Economic and Trade Cooperation Initiative on Green Mining and Minerals, held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2025, where Sierra Leone participated as an early member country.
Mr. Wang Peng said China remains committed to expanding cooperation through technical exchanges, investment dialogue, and capacity-building initiatives aimed at promoting responsible and sustainable mining practices.

The Chinese delegation also briefed the Ministry on developments surrounding the proposed China Aid Project in Sierra Leone’s mining sector and expressed interest in participating in the country’s upcoming Mining Week activities.
Minister Mattai welcomed the visit and commended the longstanding partnership between Sierra Leone and China, noting the importance of international collaboration in modernizing and expanding the country’s minerals industry.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources, the National Minerals Agency, and representatives of the Chinese Embassy attended the meeting.
