The management of the Freetown main referral and biggest teaching hospital in Freetown, Connaught Hospital, will host dozens of voluntary blood donors on Saturday 3rd May, 2025 at the hospital main blood bank.

With the aimed of saving lives and make blood available at the main blood bank, Connaught hospital, the Manager, Dr. Mark I. Kapuwa together his secretary, Dr. Tejan Baryoh and team with the Desmond Lewis voluntary blood donors foundation have decided to donate their precious gift on Saturday to save lives.

According to the hospital manager Dr. Mark Kapuwa, he wants to replicate his commitments towards voluntary blood donor’s, Kenema blood donors in Freetown.

According to Patrick Massaquoi, the Secretary General of the Foundation, the Foundation was established to honor Desmond Lewis who is the country’s highest blood donor with over a 100 units in his life time. According to Mr Patrick Massaquoi, Mr Lewis needs to be recognized as highest blood donor in Sierra Leone. “Over fifty voluntary blood donors came together to honor Mr Lewis,” Massaquoi said.

The manager of Connaught Hospital Blood Bank, Mr Philip Kamara said, “The arrangement of the drive is to provide blood for the bank to save lives. The management headed by Dr Kapuwa has done tremendous work to transform the hospital.

The clearing of the huge garbage which was in front of the bank and replaced with solar batteries have shown their commitment to better healthcare.”

Yalia Kamara, one of the Foundation’s prominent donor thanked Dr kapuwa and team for the trust and support. She said dozens of blood donors will be participating to save lives.

“Blood donation is everybody’s responsibility if more family and friends join in, commercial blood donors will be eliminated,” she said. The donation, she said, will showcase the Foundation’s commitment towards blood donations in the country.

With the continuous support and sponsorships from donors like the Connaught hospital, the management will ensure a brighter future for blood donors.
