The Citizens Forum for Democratic Accountability-Sierra Leone (C4D SL) in partnership with Forum of Sierra Leone Youth Network (FOSLYN) and League of Democracy Advocate Sierra Leone (LoDA-SL) on Wednesday 19th October 2022, held a press conference in Freetown and urged the Bank Governor to resign.
The press conference was held at the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Conference Hall on Campbell Street in Freetown.
Whilst reading out the press release, the Director of Sierra Leone (C4D-SL) Marcus Bangura said they are worried that the Bank Governor of the Bank of Sierra Leone Dr. Kelfallah Kallon cannot be easily sacked on the basis that our current legislation makes no provision for the president to dismiss the Central Bank Governor, stating further that, this legislation is to ensure that the holder of the office of the Bank Governor position is Citizens Forum for Democratic Accountability given ample time to conduct fiscal monetary policy in the interest of their countries without fear of dismissal and to ensure that they get on with their job without political interference.
He continued that in the interest of economic growth, development, and effective service delivery they are calling for the resignation of the current Bank Governor, Dr. Kelfala Kallon.
“We are joining the rest of the citizens to call for the immediate – resignation of the Bank Governor,” they said. adding by pointing out the poor economic situation in the country.
He further mentioned the recent report of the IMF on the economy of the country. He stated that the inflation rate is almost 29.7%.
“The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is too bad to talk about and the country’s Gross Domestic Product is still stagnated under the watch of the Bank Governor,” he concluded.
According to Marcus Bangura, the country is still at the bottom of the United Nations Human Development Index. He also stated that the Bank Governor lacks the requisite knowledge and experience required.
He added that the redenomination of the Leones has added more salt to the injury.
He went on by saying the Bank Governor has failed to manage the overall state of the economy.
He disclosed that the Bank Governor has cost the state to extravagantly disburse $68 Million to combat the hoarding of the Leone, which he said has added no value.
