In the heart of Jendema, a southern border community in Sorogbema Chiefdom, Pujehun District, traders are facing a serious downturn in their businesses.

They have voiced concerns about the challenges they’re encountering, including a steep decline in trade and difficulties with the Leone and Liberty currencies.

Musu Fahmbulleh, one of the affected traders, expressed her dissatisfaction with the current situation, emphasizing the struggles caused by the weakening Sierra Leonean Leone against the Liberian currency. She noted that some Liberian traders are now refusing to accept Sierra Leonean currency, further hindering local business operations. Previously, the exchange rate was 5 Leone to one hundred Liberian dollars, but traders now have to provide 12 Leone for the same amount, causing significant losses.

In addition, traders are burdened by customs fees imposed by Jendema customs authorities on fish purchased in Liberia, which are further straining their already struggling businesses and affecting their ability to remain profitable.

The economic challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic have compounded these difficulties, making it harder for traders to recover and maintain their livelihoods. In light of these obstacles, the traders are calling on the Government of Sierra Leone to waive the customs fees on their imports and provide support to ease their financial strain.

The traders are also appealing to humanitarian organizations, the government, and private individuals for assistance with microfinance opportunities. They believe that with access to financial support, they can stabilize their businesses, support their families, repay loans, and ensure their children’s education continues without interruption.

It is crucial to highlight the struggles of these traders in Jendema and amplify their appeal for assistance. By raising awareness of their plight, we can encourage stakeholders to come together to provide the necessary support and help these traders rebuild their businesses for a sustainable future.
