The Parliament of Sierra Leone has joined the world in commemorating Cyber Security Awareness Month, an international initiative aimed at promoting online safety and protecting data from cyberattacks.
At a ceremony held in Committee Room One, Head of Parliament’s Cyber Security Unit, Mohamed Lebbie, emphasized the importance of safeguarding digital systems.
“Cybersecurity is about protecting data and preventing threats from malicious actors,” he said, urging staff to avoid unverified links, be cautious on social media, and regularly update passwords using numbers, letters, and symbols every three months.
Deputy Clerk of Parliament, Gilbert Bosco N’habay, highlighted the Parliament’s responsibility in leading a robust digital system for the country. “We must remain vigilant and build a Parliament that prioritizes cybersecurity while setting an example for all Sierra Leoneans,” he stated.
In his keynote address, Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs, Patrick M. Gibrilla, praised the government’s efforts to strengthen national digital safety, citing initiatives such as the Cyber Security Act of 2021 and the establishment of the national cybersecurity coordination center. He emphasized that digital safety is a shared national responsibility that transcends politics.
The event brought together parliamentary staff, government officials, and stakeholders to raise awareness on cyber threats, promote safe online practices, and reinforce Sierra Leone’s commitment to secure digital infrastructure.
