The Minister of Basic and Secondary Education (MBSSE), David Moinina Sengeh has said that children are the ones who suffered the most in war as their education and livelihood will be destroyed.
He made this statement on social media in view of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
“In all these acts of global violence, it’s the children who suffer the most. Millions will be out of school, yet again. Their futures remain unknown. Will they die? Will their schools be destroyed? What’s the point of education anyway, they wonder? Our children deserve better!” Minister Sengeh stated.
Currently, there are 40 Sierra Leonean students studying in various universities in Ukraine, including the Ternopil National Medical University; Western Ukrainian National University; and Ternopil National Technical University.
Yesterday, the Sierra Leone Embassy issued a press release stating that they have got in touch with some of the Sierra Leonean students in Ukraine, and are making frantic efforts for them to be crossed and relocated over to neighbouring countries like; Poland, Lithuania, Slovakia Moldova, Hungary, and Belarus.
The Embassy further stated that they have not yet received any information of harm of any Sierra Leonean Citizens in Ukraine since the conflict started.
