Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Umaru Napoleon Koroma, is leading a delegation from the National Mineral Agency (NMA) at the 20th Annual General Meeting of the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals, and Sustainable Development (IGF).
The event, held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, focuses on redefining mining to align with global sustainability goals.
Under the theme “Redefining Mining: Balancing the Need for Minerals with Protecting People and the Planet,” the forum brings together leaders from the United Nations, governments, private sector, and civil society to discuss strategies for achieving sustainable mining standards. During a plenary session, Deputy Minister Koroma joined other global leaders, including IGF Executive Committee Chair Mr. Mohato Moima, to explore collaborative approaches to balancing mineral extraction with environmental and social protection.
Sierra Leone has demonstrated its commitment to sustainable mining through progressive legislation, including the Mines and Minerals Development Act 2022, which emphasizes community welfare, environmental conservation, and transparent resource management. Deputy Minister Koroma will further highlight the country’s leadership in reforms during a high-level roundtable organized by the Commonwealth, focusing on the future of critical minerals and responsible mining practices.
The Deputy Minister is accompanied by Dr. Solomon P. Gbanie, Acting Director of Technology and Information Management at NMA; Madam Daphne Winnebah, Compliance and Audit Management; and Mr. Eugene Norman, Manager of the Mining Cadastre Office.
