The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) announced its commitment to environmental protection in Sierra Leone with a $10 million investment.
This funding, approved in the third quarter of fiscal year 2024, aims to safeguard the country’s vital natural ecosystems.
The DFC’s contribution will take the form of political risk insurance, supporting West Africa Blue’s investment in a mangrove blue carbon project located in the Bonthe and Moyamba regions. This project prioritizes collaboration with local communities, fostering long-term conservation efforts. Additionally, it seeks to restore these ecosystems and provide local residents with new income opportunities.
Funding for these initiatives will be generated through the issuance of certified carbon credits. These credits represent a measurable unit of greenhouse gas reduction, allowing companies and organizations to offset their carbon footprints.
