Dr. Austin Demby, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Health, has been appointed Chair of the Inter-Ministerial Network of the Global Financing Facility (GFF), a global initiative supported by the World Bank that aims to strengthen health systems in low- and middle-income countries.
Dr. Demby’s appointment, which was unanimously endorsed by health ministers from GFF member states, was announced at a recent summit held at Fraser Suites in Abuja, Nigeria.
The Inter-Ministerial Network comprises health leaders from GFF countries, including Nigeria, Malawi, Liberia, and Senegal. Together, these nations aim to improve healthcare outcomes, particularly for women, girls, and adolescents. As Chair, Dr. Demby pledged to drive initiatives that prioritize life-saving interventions and strengthen GFF programs for vulnerable populations.
“My tenure as chair will prioritize saving lives through reinvigorated health initiatives and optimized GFF programs,” Dr. Demby stated.
He emphasized a commitment to fostering ambitious health agendas and encouraged his peers to form strong partnerships that can effectively implement the GFF’s targeted health strategies.
During the Abuja meeting, government and civil society representatives discussed ways to collaborate with both state and non-state actors to make GFF programs more impactful. Attendees focused on creating effective frameworks to advance GFF’s mission of sustainable financing for global health improvements.
Dr. Demby’s new role underscores Sierra Leone’s growing influence in global health. Despite facing domestic challenges, the country is increasingly recognized as a committed partner in international health collaborations.
