Dr. Kadi Sesay, renowned feminist, scholar, politician, and pro-democracy advocate, has passed away in the United States after a prolonged illness. She was 76.
Family sources confirmed her death earlier on Sunday morning, June 15, 2025.
The late woman was regarded as a trailblazer for women in Sierra Leone, after she broke multiple barriers—becoming the first woman to head a national commission, the first female vice-presidential candidate, and a key figure in post-war governance and peacebuilding efforts.
The late woman, under the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), served as running mate to Julius Maada Bio in the 2012 elections when they lost to the then incumbent Ernest Bai Koroma of the All People’s Congress (APC).
Before that, Sesay served as Cabinet Minister in the Ahmad Tejan Kabbah administration -first as Minister of Development and Economic Planning from 1999 to 2002 and then, Minister of Trade and Industry from 2002 to 2007.
The late woman is survived by her three loving children including former CNN news anchor Isha Sesay.
Her passing marks the end of an era for Sierra Leonean public life.
May her soul rest in peace.
