Hon. Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella, Chairman of the Electricity Generation and Control Group (EGCG), conducted a high-profile inspection of the Pujehun power station and its distribution network today.
Speaking during the visit, Dr. Yumkella emphasized the government’s focus on delivering impactful outcomes, stating, “We close the year focused on delivery, outcomes, and impact.”
The inspection follows significant progress in the electrification of Sierra Leone’s rural towns. Over the past three months, joint efforts by the Ministry of Energy (MOE), the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), the Electricity Generation and Transmission Company (EGTC), and contractors have successfully energized four towns—Bonthe, Kailahun, Pujehun, and Moyamba. Notably, the Bonthe power station became operational last week.
This milestone aligns with President Julius Maada Bio’s commitment to electrify seven towns, a promise made two years ago. Electrification of Kambia, Kabala, and Matru Jong is on track for completion by mid-2025, achieving the government’s stated goal.
President Bio underscored the importance of renewable energy in the country’s electrification strategy. “The longer-term solution for these towns would be to provide solar systems with battery storage,” he said. “This will not only reduce the operational cost of power, but it will also eventually help to make electricity affordable for the people. We hope our development partners will support the transition to renewable energy for these towns.”
