The ECOWAS Court of Justice has adjourned a landmark case involving allegations of human rights violations in Sierra Leone.

The case, Satta Lamin Banya v. Republic of Sierra Leone, centers around an alleged gang rape that occurred following the country’s 2018 elections.

The applicant, Satta Lamin Banya, is seeking justice for the attack, which she claims took place amid the post-election chaos. The case has garnered significant attention due to the serious nature of the allegations and the broader implications for human rights protection in the region.

At the hearing on September 27, 2024, the court granted an adjournment request made by the applicant’s legal counsel. The new counsel, from the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa, cited the need for additional time to familiarize themselves with the case and prepare for the proceedings.

The ECOWAS Court has rescheduled the hearing for November 4, 2024.
