The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed serious concern over escalating tensions along the borders of the Republic of Guinea with its neighbours, the Republic of Liberia and the Republic of Sierra Leone.
In response to the situation, the ECOWAS Commission is deploying a technical assessment mission to evaluate the circumstances in the Yenga border area between Guinea and Sierra Leone. The recent developments along the Lofa border between Guinea and Liberia, which have added new complexities to existing territorial sensitivities in the Mano River Basin, have prompted the Commission to expand the geographical scope of the mission. Additional diplomatic engagements are also being undertaken to ensure a comprehensive assessment of all areas experiencing current or potential friction.
ECOWAS has urged all affected member states to exercise maximum restraint, immediately de-escalate tensions, respect internationally recognized boundaries, and refrain from unilateral actions that could undermine bilateral relations or regional security. The Commission emphasized that disputes should be resolved through ECOWAS-facilitated diplomatic channels to ensure peaceful outcomes.
Reaffirming its commitment to regional stability, the Commission stated it will continue to work closely with national authorities to foster mutual respect, cooperation, and lasting peace in the Mano River Basin, for the benefit of all West Africans.
Facts finding for the second time, how long will this end, while the guys are still on the rampage?
It is inevitably obvious that results emanating from the ECOWAS technical assessment mission; if done judiciously, would find Guinea & their intransigent leader Doumbouya wanting, for causing unnecessary aggression & tensions against peaceful neighboring countries. It is all in a bid to make consistent unprovoked invasions into the territories of neighboring Sierra Leone & Liberia. Why is Sierra Leone & Liberia not experiencing similar conflicts? It appears this pattern of land-grabbing goes far back as Liberians complain about previous lands lost to Guinea, while Sierra Leone lost it’s eastern corridor Yenga to Guinea not too long ago. Again, the Guineans are threatening further incursions into another close vicinity to Yenga, & lately taken 1.4km into Falaba, Northern Sierra Leonean. SLeoneans & Liberians would be greatly expectant that consequent to this mission’s excercise, ECOWAS would prove their mettle by demanding the return of all illegally obtained territories from SLeone & Liberia, through due processes & furthermore be given a strong ultimatum to desist from carrying out illegal invasions into the territories of neighboring countries. Guinea risks prosecution for violation of United Nations charter that prohibits the use of force against another State.
