The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) has been honoured with the Award for Exceptional Management of Electoral Conflict at the 21st International Electoral Awards, held from October 1st to 4th, 2025.

The prestigious event, co-hosted by the Independent Electoral Commission of Botswana and the International Centre for Parliamentary Studies (ICPS), brought together leading electoral experts and practitioners from across the globe to celebrate excellence in election management.

The conflict management award specifically honours electoral bodies, officials, or civil society organisations that have effectively managed pre- or post-electoral conflict or successfully conducted elections in a conflict-prone environment.

The ECSL’s recognition comes amidst a complex backdrop following Sierra Leone’s 2023 multi-tier elections. The electoral period was marked by significant domestic and international scrutiny.

While the ECSL, under Chairman Mohamed K. Konneh, has consistently maintained that the polls were “peaceful, free, fair, and credible,” the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) and international observers, including the European Union and the Carter Centre, raised concerns about statistical inconsistencies and alleged malpractice.

The award appears to acknowledge the Commission’s role in navigating the contentious post-election atmosphere. This includes participating in a nationally-focused Tripartite Committee, established with support from international partners, to review the electoral process and make recommendations for future reforms.

In the face of these challenges, the ECSL has continued its nationwide engagement with stakeholders, supported by International IDEA, focusing on enhancing women’s participation and accommodating persons with disabilities in future electoral processes.
