The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) together with the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, officially released calendar for upcoming paramount chieftaincy elections in Perri and Barrie chiefdoms in Pujehun district.
According to the calendar, the Declaration of Rights for possible contestants of Perri chiefdom is scheduled for September 16th, 2024, and the polling date schedule for October 2nd, 2024. The process marks a critical step in the democratic selection of the paramount chief, a position steeped in tradition and community leadership.
This announcement have brought numerous aspirants from various rolling houses expressing their ambitions, which have made the race highly competitive.
Notable contenders who have showed interest include Gogra’s, Dabeni’s, Kpakara Massalay’s, Koroma’s, Jakema’s, and Kemokai’s, among others. Each candidate brings unique perspectives and visions for the future of the chiefdom, promising an engaging electoral period.
Following the Perri chiefdom elections, the Ministry and ECSL have also announced the Barrie chiefdom paramount chieftaincy election schedule as the Stakeholders Engagement will be held on September 19th, 2024, which will be followed by an Assessment period from September 23 to 25, 2024.
The Revision phase is set for October 2nd to 4th, 2024. The structured timeline ensures that all voices are heard and that the electoral process remains transparent and inclusive.
The Ministry and ECSL have issued a reminder to all aspirants about the importance of adhering to the local chieftaincy act, stating that public campaigning is strictly prohibited until after the Declaration of Rights, a measure designed to maintain order and fairness in the electoral process.
The Ministry and ECSL have emphasized on the need for peace and civility among the communities in both chiefdoms. They urge residents to engage in constructive dialogue and informed decision-making, stressing that elections should focus on community betterment rather than conflict.
