The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) officially opened its highly sophisticated Ultra-Modern Media Center on Wednesday, May 28, 2024, at its headquarters in Tower Hill, Freetown.
Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the center aims to host a variety of media events, reflecting standards comparable to those of developed nations.
Chief Electoral Commissioner Mohamed Konneh expressed gratitude to the government and development partners for their ongoing support. He emphasized that the media center represents a significant milestone for the ECSL, highlighting the need for transparency and effective communication in the electoral process.
“In today’s dynamic electoral environment, the role of credible and accessible communication cannot be overstated,” Konneh stated. He noted that the facility will facilitate real-time engagement among journalists, observers, political parties, and civil society, particularly during critical electoral moments.
As the ECSL prepares for the 2025-2029 electoral cycle, the media center will serve as a hub for press briefings, media monitoring, and combating misinformation. The commission has also contracted for the installation of a lift to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities.
Zainab Umu Moseray, Commissioner for Western Area Urban and Chairman of the Project, highlighted that the launch is not just about the physical structure but a commitment to enhancing public engagement and informed participation in democracy. She cited the theme “Enhancing Civic and Electoral Education for Informed and Inclusive Participation,” emphasizing the importance of well-informed citizens.
Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, commended the media for their efforts in disseminating information and stressed the need for neutral reporting. He encouraged other institutions to follow the ECSL’s innovative example and pledged the government’s continued support for developmental activities.
The event also featured statements from the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Deputy Head of Mission from Iceland, representing donor support. The Executive Secretary of the ECSL chaired the proceedings.
