The Sierra Leone Embassy in Dakar has begun issuing more than 200 Laissez-Passers to Sierra Leoneans in Mauritania who wish to return home voluntarily.

The distribution commenced on Monday, 9th June, 2025 at ‘CANAL’ in Nouakchott, a site accessible to all Sierra Leoneans.

The initiative is supported by the Sierra Leone National Union in Mauritania. On May 22, the embassy conducted a verification and registration exercise for Sierra Leoneans needing Laissez-Passers, prompted by ongoing arrests and deportations of foreign nationals in Mauritania due to their lack of legal status.

The embassy has previously facilitated the repatriation of 134 Sierra Leoneans from Mauritania on two separate occasions.

During the recent verification process, over 500 Sierra Leoneans were confirmed as needing assistance. Priority is being given to those who wish to return voluntarily, including individuals who have already been deported to the border town of Rosso.

The embassy is also preparing to issue additional Laissez-Passers to support the safe return of Sierra Leoneans facing difficulties in Mauritania.
