- In a truly unique development, the once barren cow yard along Maheboima Road in Kindia Town has been reborn as a symbol of hope and progress for the entire community.
On November 8, 2024, a momentous occasion unfolded as dignitaries, community members, and health officials came together to celebrate the grand opening of the Kindia Town Maternal and Child Health Center.
This incredible project, led by the visionary Elder Kenneth Pambu, was brought to life through the collaborative efforts of Engage Now Africa (ENA) and the Ministry of Health and Sanitation. This center stands as a testament to the power of unity and dedication in creating a brighter future for all.
The land, previously known as the CowYard, had been a site where cattle were slaughtered. Its journey from a place of utility to a center of health and healing began with the dedication of Ward 276 Councilor Abdul Razak Kanu, affectionately called Akiezo.
He worked tirelessly alongside local stakeholders, youth leaders, and the proactive Mayor of Bo District, Musa Kobba. Their joint efforts, supported by Paramount Chief Prince Lappia Boima, led to the handover of the land to the Ministry of Health.
The modern hospital boasts a large laboratory, an emergency drugs room, and consultation rooms for both Community Health Officers (CHOs) and doctors. The hospital is equipped with a powerful 40 KG standby generator, ensuring continuous power supply, and features an educational hall fitted with 12 laptops. Additionally, a fully stocked pharmacy stands ready to serve the medical needs of Bo District residents.
The commissioning event was a momentous occasion, drawing attendance from a cross-section of leaders and stakeholders. The gathering was led by Dr. Charles Senessie, Acting Minister of Health, who represented President Maada Bio and his commitment to improving healthcare nationwide.
Distinguished speakers graced the event, including the Bo District Medical Officer, Dr. Amara Stevens Ngegbai; Medical Superintendent, Dr. Osman Kakay; Director of Primary Health Care, Dr. Osio Kamara; Bo District Chairman, Victor K. Hindowa; and ENA’s very own Dr. Susan Arogyasami and Jennifer Hogge Ellsworth.
The event commenced with prayers from leaders of both the Christian and Muslim faiths, setting the stage for unity and collective hope. Jennifer Hogge Ellsworth, ENA’s Executive Director, expressed her deep gratitude for Sierra Leone, stating, “I am always touched by the warmth and open-mindedness of Sierra Leoneans. This project is a testament to that spirit, and I am honored to be a part of something that will benefit the community for generations to come.”
Mayor Musa Kobba, in a powerful address, reflected on the transformation of the site from a mere cowyard to a state-of-the-art hospital. “Today, we stand here where cattle once roamed, a symbol of progress,” he declared.
Dr. Amara Stevens Ngegbai, the Bo District Medical Officer, stressed the importance of community ownership of the facility, urging residents to maintain and protect it for the greater good. Paramount Chief Prince Lappia Boima echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the collective responsibility to safeguard the center against theft and vandalism.
Acting Minister of Health Dr. Charles Senessie, representing the government, highlighted President Bio’s commitment to healthcare. “This hospital is a testament to our dedication to improving health services nationwide. With the assistance of Engage Now Africa, we have taken a significant step forward,” he proclaimed, expressing gratitude to all involved and reaffirming the government’s unwavering support for health workers and facilities.
The inauguration of the Kindia Town Maternal and Child Health Center represents a momentous occasion for Bo District and the entire nation of Sierra Leone. What was once a mere plot of land has been transformed into a symbol of the incredible results that can be achieved through teamwork, foresight, and unwavering commitment to the health and prosperity of a community. This center stands as a beacon of hope and progress, a shining example of what can be accomplished when individuals come together with a shared goal of improving the lives of others.
