The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) conducted an ecotour to the Sella Water Community in Godriche on June 5, 2025, as part of the World Environment Day (WED) celebrations.

The initiative brought together pupils and teacher coordinators from ten schools in Freetown to explore the impacts of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems.

During the event, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Jiwoh Abdulai, addressed the attendees, stressing the dangers posed by plastic waste. “Plastic endangers marine life and disrupts food webs and livelihoods, especially in coastal regions,” he said.

Minister Abdulai highlighted the urgent need for improved waste management practices, noting that only 9% of plastic produced is recycled.

He advocated for the development and enforcement of waste management regulations, enhancement of waste management facilities, and increased investment in recycling initiatives.

“Sustainable projects go hand in hand with sustainable practices, and effectively handling and disposing of plastic waste is one way to tackle plastic pollution,” he added.

The tour featured a visit to local mangroves, which have been adversely affected by plastic waste, illustrating the environmental challenges faced by the community.

The tour concluded with a question-and-answer session, allowing students to share their insights and reflections on the experience.
