The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a press release declaring the maturity of the Agricultural and Agro-based Industrial Activities Regulations and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Fees Regulations of 2024, marking a significant milestone in environmental governance in Sierra Leone
The EPA, operating under the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, has unveiled two pivotal regulations aimed at fostering sustainable agricultural practices and ensuring environmental compliance in industrial activities. These regulations, namely the Environmental Protection Agency (Environmental Impact Assessment Fees) Regulation 2024 and the Environment Protection Agency (Agricultural and Agro-based Industrial Activities) Regulations 2024, have been formally ratified as law after completing the mandatory 21-day statutory requirement.
The Agricultural and Agro-based Industrial Activities Regulations 2024 are designed to bolster the agricultural sector’s growth by fostering a conducive business environment while simultaneously promoting sustainable and climate-smart agricultural practices across Sierra Leone. By providing a framework for environmentally responsible agricultural activities, these regulations seek to enhance productivity and resilience within the sector.
Moreover, the Sector-Specific Fee Regulations for Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) ensure that fees are tailored to the environmental impact of each industry seeking an EIA License. This approach ensures fairness and equity in fee calculations, promoting investment in the agriculture sector while safeguarding environmental interests.
Through these regulations, both local agricultural enterprises and foreign investors are poised to thrive, thereby contributing to the success of Sierra Leone’s flagship program, Feed Salone. By expanding agricultural production and enhancing food availability, these initiatives aim to improve food security and bolster economic development in the country.
Members of the public are encouraged to access the regulations on the EPA’s website and provide feedback to enhance environmental compliance and protection efforts. The EPA reaffirms its commitment to upholding environmental standards and ensuring sustainable development across Sierra Leone.
