Sierra Leone, First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio joined Members of Parliament for the pre-legislative hearing on the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2024. Her passionate advocacy underscored the non-partisan and national importance of the proposed legislation.

Dr. Bio shared her personal connection to the cause, revealing that she was once a victim of child marriage, a trauma she still feels today. She urged MPs to view the Bill as crucial for the welfare of Sierra Leone’s children, irrespective of religious or political affiliations. Highlighting the widespread issues faced by both girls and boys, she stressed that the Bill addresses a critical need for protection and empowerment.

Her Excellency called for unity and peace, noting that these are essential for progress. She praised supportive MPs and emphasized that collective action can unveil Sierra Leone’s potential for greatness. “Doing the right thing is always the best course of action,” she asserted, urging MPs to put politics aside for the nation’s future.

Hon. Mariama Munia Zombo, who is piloting the Bill in Parliament, emphasized its historic significance. She pointed out that comprehensive legislation is necessary to tackle the multifaceted challenges posed by child marriage, which individual ministries cannot address alone. She also praised the First Lady and President Dr. Julius Maada Bio for the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act, 2023, which has significantly boosted female representation in governance. Hon. Zombo stressed the constitutional mandate empowering Parliament to enact such laws, highlighting the Bill’s role in allowing children to enjoy their childhoods and thrive.

Chairman of the Legislative Committee, Hon. Abdul S. Marray Conteh, commended the First Lady for her efforts and reiterated the Bill’s importance in combating child marriage. Leader of the main Opposition Party APC, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, praised the cross-party collaboration among women and assured support for the Bill’s passage.

Leader of Government Business, Hon. Mattew Sahr Nyuma, lauded the First Lady’s dedication to children’s welfare, referring to her as the “Messiah for the Children in Sierra Leone.” He emphasized the Bill’s significance under the “Hands Off Our Girls” initiative. Many other MPs expressed their commitment to ensuring the Bill becomes law, marking a significant step towards safeguarding the future of Sierra Leone’s youth.
