First Lady Fatima Bio recently voiced her concerns regarding escalating tensions within the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) following the 2023 general election.
She stated that many party members appear to be prioritizing presidential ambitions over their official duties.
Speaking at a public gathering, the First Lady highlighted that internal leadership disputes are diverting members’ attention from their responsibilities. She noted that numerous individuals are now vying to succeed President Julius Maada Bio, despite his ongoing term.
While acknowledging that aspiring for the presidency is not an offense, Mrs. Bio stressed that any future selection of an SLPP leader must be based on a strong legacy of achievements rather than merely time in office. She emphasized the importance of the party presenting Sierra Leoneans with a tangible and memorable legacy, one that reflects concrete accomplishments during their tenure.
The First Lady also addressed public perception, stating that some view her as a “bad person” for actively resisting further divisions within the party. She clarified that her intention is to maintain order and stability within the SLPP, asserting that the party needs to focus on delivering its promises rather than prioritizing leadership struggles.
Mrs. Bio specifically referenced the party’s “Big Five” agenda, urging SLPP members to set aside leadership competition until they can demonstrate fulfillment of these commitments to the people of Sierra Leone. She underscored the necessity for the party to remain focused on its responsibilities, particularly during a period when national unity and progress are crucial.
She concluded by expressing her desire for President Maada Bio to leave the party in a strong position, not in opposition. She implored SLPP members to concentrate on their duties and uphold unity, reiterating that the party’s direction should be guided by performance and results, not by internal rivalry.
