The market shade covers project which was introduced by the Freetown City Council FCC two months back for different markets in the municipality of Freetown has commenced.

The Mayor of Freetown Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr expresses joy over the work.

“Two months after the launch of the Freetown Market Shade Cover Project, I am thrilled that installation is completed at Congo Market and will soon be completed at Bombay Street and Calaba Town Markets, with the theme “protecting women and girls from extreme heat”, our technical and funding partner Arsht-Rock Resilience Center has collaborated with FCC in this project to address the growing challenge of extreme heat resulting from climate change”.

The mayor went further to explain some of the other projects under construction by the FCC.

“FCC is committed to the construction of permanent markets and a three-story market is currently under construction in Wilberforce Village at a cost of over 4 billion old Leones. Given the high capital cost of building new markets, in the immediate to short term, the market shade covers will provide much-needed relief and protection for traders from the heat and the rain”.
