Freetown City Council (FCC) has expressed its full support for the ongoing investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) into the alleged misuse of public funds by some Council staff.
During a media briefing earlier today, FCC management stated they are fully backing the ACC in its investigation. The inquiry began after the Council discovered in November 2024 that revenue from billboards had not been deposited into the Council’s bank accounts. In response to this, FCC set up an internal team to look into the issue, and shortly after, the ACC started its own investigation, which is now being led by the anti-corruption body.
Abubakarr Turay, deputy director of outreach and public relations at the ACC, mentioned that the Commission is continuing its efforts to ensure accountability in this case.
Since Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr took office, the Council has worked to improve how it collects and tracks revenue. These changes made it easier to spot the missing funds, which led to the investigation now underway.
