The Minister of Finance, Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving Sierra Leone’s energy sector through major initiatives such as the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact and the Mission 300 program.
Speaking during a press briefing organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education at the Miatta Conference Centre, Minister Bangura highlighted the country’s key infrastructure investments aimed at expanding and stabilizing the national power supply.
He noted that the MCC Compact focuses on developing core power infrastructure, including modern transmission lines, distribution networks, and dispatch centers. The project is designed to create a national energy loop, ensuring all districts are interconnected and benefit from improved electricity delivery.
In addition, the Mission 300 initiative targets renewable and scalable energy sources, including solar, hydro, gas, and other clean technologies. According to Minister Bangura, the program complements the MCC Compact by ensuring adequate energy supply once the foundational infrastructure is in place.
He also highlighted Sierra Leone’s participation in the ECOWAS Regional Power Trade System under the West African Power Pool. This positions the country to engage in energy trading with neighboring states once local demand is met.
Minister Bangura emphasized that Mission 300 is structured to attract investment, with fully costed components and clear business models to assure returns for investors. Energy sector reforms have also been implemented to reduce risks and open the market to private sector participation, ending previous monopolies.
He concluded by stating that funding for both initiatives will come from a combination of government allocations, development partners, and private investments, all contributing to the long-term sustainability of Sierra Leone’s energy sector.
