The Freetown City Council (FCC) has launched a three-day tree giveaway event on Friday, August 23.
In a bid to revitalize Freetown’s environment, the initiative aims to distribute and co-plant 25,000 trees across the city
Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, joined by partners such as the Ministry of Tourism, the National Tourist Board, IOM, GIZ, and Welthungerhilfe, symbolically planted the first tree at Lumley Beach. The event also honored the late Sia Kamara, a key figure in the FCC’s tree planting initiative, which the World Bank and Bloomberg Philanthropies supported.
To ensure the trees’ growth is monitored effectively, each tree will be digitally tracked. The tree giveaway is a significant step towards increasing Freetown’s green spaces.
The trees will be distributed at various locations throughout the city, including Bottom Mango, Aberdeen Road Roundabout, Dwarzack Junction, Lumley Mack Pharmacy, Calaba Town, St. John, Wallace Johnson Street Bus Halt, Upgun Roundabout, Shell, and Congo Cross.
