Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio has spoken publicly on growing rumours about her possible ambition to become a political flagbearer, saying any decision on leadership would come only “when God speaks.”

Bio made the remarks during a recent media interview held on Monday, February 9, 2026, when asked directly when Sierra Leoneans should expect an official declaration from her.

In response, she said leadership comes from God and not personal timing or pressure. “When God speaks,” Bio said, adding that leadership “Only comes from God.”

Responding to another question on whether she is prepared to lead the country if called upon, the First Lady questioned what she described as unfounded controversies surrounding her name. She suggested that criticism often stems from discomfort with a successful woman in public life.

As much as you think there are lots of baseless controversies that do not exist because people are just so timid, knowing fully well that a woman is this successful,” she said. She then posed a rhetorical question to viewers: “Every program that has had my name on it in this country, have they been successful?”

Bio did not confirm any intention to contest for political office but used the opportunity to advise eligible voters ahead of future elections. She urged Sierra Leoneans to make decisions based on character and proven records rather than promises.

She called on citizens to assess “what the person has done,” and not to rely on “paper or words” when choosing leaders. According to her, voters should not support candidates based on promises alone but on past achievements.

The interview comes amid ongoing public discussion about potential political contenders ahead of the next general elections. While Bio did not declare any political ambition, her comments have added to national debate about leadership, gender, and political succession in Sierra Leone.

Fatima Bio, the wife of President Julius Maada Bio, has been a prominent public figure through her involvement in social advocacy and national programs since becoming First Lady.
