Kono District is set to take centre stage as the Ministry of Information and Civic Education officially launches the 2026 Civic Day Series from 23rd to 24th February at the Kono District Council Hall.

The two-day engagement marks the beginning of this year’s nationwide citizen outreach initiative aimed at strengthening dialogue between government and the people.

The Civic Day Series forms part of the Ministry’s broader commitment to deepen transparency, accountability, and participatory governance. By creating an open platform for interaction, the programme seeks to provide citizens with direct access to government officials while addressing pressing national and local issues.

Day one, scheduled for Sunday, 23rd February, will focus on youth participation through an inter-school quiz and debate competition. The event is designed to promote civic awareness among pupils, encouraging them to develop a deeper understanding of governance, national development priorities, and their roles as responsible citizens. Organisers say the initiative reflects the Ministry’s commitment to nurturing informed and engaged future leaders.

The second day, Monday, 24th February, will feature interactive panel discussions bringing together government ministers, civil society representatives, youth leaders, traditional authorities, and other community stakeholders. The sessions are expected to provide an opportunity for residents of Kono and surrounding communities to raise concerns, ask questions, and receive direct responses from policymakers.

Among the key national issues slated for discussion are the ongoing constitutional review process, preparations for the forthcoming population and housing census, road infrastructure development, agriculture, mining sector reforms, education, and local governance reform. These topics reflect critical areas of national importance with significant implications for community development and economic growth.

The Ministry has emphasized that the Civic Day Series is not merely a forum for speeches but a platform for meaningful engagement, where citizens’ voices can influence policy direction and implementation. By hosting the first Civic Day of 2026 in Kono, the Ministry aims to reinforce inclusive governance and ensure that development conversations reach every district across the country.

Residents, students, community leaders, and civil society groups in Kono are being encouraged to actively participate in the programme and take advantage of the opportunity to engage directly with government representatives.

As anticipation builds, the Kono Civic Day Series promises to set the tone for a year of strengthened dialogue and collaborative nation-building.
