In a bid to address the pressing energy challenge in Freetown, the Ministry of Finance of Sierra Leone, in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), took decisive action on April 26th, 2024.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Finance, it was revealed that negotiations with Karpowership management yielded significant results. A disbursement of US$ 17 million was made to Karpowership, aiming to alleviate outstanding financial obligations. This strategic move is anticipated to mitigate the current energy crisis gripping the capital city.
Moreover, in a concerted effort to diversify energy sources and ensure continuous power supply, the government transferred an additional US$ 1.5 million to TRANSCO-CLSG. This initiative aims to bolster power supply from Côte D’Ivoire, reinforcing the region’s energy infrastructure.
The Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Energy, and EDSA are poised to engage with independent Power Producers (IPPs) to renegotiate existing contracts. The overarching objective is to forge sustainable and reliable energy supply agreements that cater to the nation’s growing demands.
Furthermore, the press release underscores the government’s commitment to implementing structural reforms within the energy sector. Deepening engagement between the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Energy, and EDSA is slated to drive comprehensive reforms aimed at enhancing the sector’s financial viability.
The disbursement of US$ 18.5 million signifies a crucial step forward in Sierra Leone’s quest for energy security and sustainability. By proactively addressing financial obligations and fostering collaboration with key stakeholders, the government demonstrates its resolve to tackle the energy crisis head-on.
This move is poised to yield tangible benefits for citizens, businesses, and the economy at large. Access to reliable electricity is indispensable for economic growth, social development, and overall quality of life. As such, the government’s proactive stance is poised to have a transformative impact on Sierra Leone’s energy landscape.
While challenges persist, the government’s proactive measures signal a promising trajectory towards a more resilient and robust energy sector. The press release concludes with a call for continued public support and cooperation as the government works tirelessly to ensure a brighter and more energy-secure future for all Sierra Leoneans.
