The Government of Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Social Welfare has issued a statement reaffirming Sierra Leone’s commitment to religious tolerance and national unity, following the circulation of videos on social media in which certain religious leaders reportedly discouraged Muslims from accepting food or extending goodwill to Christians during the Christmas season.

In a press release dated 27 December 2025, the Ministry emphasized that such views do not reflect the values or traditions of Sierra Leone, a nation long recognized for peaceful coexistence between Muslims and Christians.

For generations, communities have lived together as neighbours and families, sharing meals, celebrations, and mutual respect without compromising personal beliefs

The Ministry reminded the public that while the Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, it also upholds tolerance, respect, and social cohesion. Messages that promote division or exclusion, the Ministry said, run contrary to these principles. Acts such as sharing food, exchanging greetings during religious celebrations, and extending goodwill across faiths are seen as expressions of humanity that strengthen community bonds and national peace.

The Ministry further called on all religious leaders and public figures to exercise responsibility and restraint, particularly on social media, and to use their influence to promote peace, unity, and mutual understanding.

The Government reiterated its commitment to protecting religious freedom while ensuring national harmony and social stability.
