The Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, held discussions with employees of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) to address their concerns regarding welfare and governance.
Key issues highlighted in the engagement included staff welfare, particularly for those earning below the minimum wage, and demands for the dissolution of the SLBC Board.
Minister Bah explained that the SLBC Act of 2010 governs the Corporation’s structure and authority. He noted that the Act outlines the responsibilities of the Board of Trustees, the Director General, and the supervising Ministry.
He further indicated that the Board cannot be dissolved unilaterally, as it comprises representatives from reputable institutions, including the Bar Association, Inter-Religious Council, and Civil Society Organizations.
Regarding staff welfare, the Minister confirmed that employees earning below the minimum wage have been identified, ensuring that the ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Finance and the Human Resource Management Office (HRMO) aim to rectify salary discrepancies and ensure proper staff reclassification.
In response to the staff’s request for access to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) report on SLBC, Minister Bah clarified that the report remains confidential. He advised staff to formally write to the ACC for access. He reiterated his commitment to supporting SLBC staff and encouraged them to remain dedicated to their roles.
Minister Bah also addressed allegations that the Ministry had taken control of SLBC cameras. He clarified that the Ministry, with assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has independently acquired five cameras and other multimedia equipment to support its weekly press briefings and civic engagements, having previously rented audiovisual equipment.
