Hawa Hunt, a contestant on the reality show “House of Stars,” has been remanded in custody after failing to meet bail conditions.
Hunt was arrested live on television on December 22nd, 2024, on charges related to alleged disparaging remarks about President Bio and First Lady Fatima Bio during the recent election campaign.
Lawyer Alie Sultan Kamara, who previously represented Hunt, secured her bail last Thursday with two conditions: surrendering her Sierra Leonean and Canadian passports, and providing two sureties with properties in Freetown’s central business district. While Hunt complied with the passport surrender, she was unable to secure the necessary sureties.
“Despite all efforts, she did not get the two sureties that were willing to put up their properties up until yesterday,” stated Lawyer Kamara in a statement. “In the midst of that, her management team yesterday said they have other lawyers to come in. Right in front of my face, Hawa Hunt refused to accept any other lawyers.”
Following accusations of misconduct from Hunt’s daughter in Canada, Lawyer Kamara withdrew his representation, stating, “To uphold the ethics of the Legal profession, I immediately contacted the police and withdrew my representation.”
Hunt was subsequently charged and remanded in custody.
Alicia Hunt, daughter of Hawa Hunt, expressed concern about her mother’s continued detention, stating, “There were rumors that my mother was released yesterday which I had believed because of the apology video that was posted. She was only released to do that interview. She is still in captivity.”
The case will now proceed with new legal representation for Hawa Hunt.
Freedom of speech is very much well and alive in our country, I see. We sweh. En den wan dem wae dae abuse dem position even more sweh. Den say e cuss purson, en den lok am up for that, den for such a simple thing, the courts want her to have two people put up their houses as bail? What kind of nonsense is that. How many houses do you have to put up for bail for murder, or if you are a tif tif minister?
