Sierra Leone’s Minister of Health, Austin Demby, has conducted an inspection of the ongoing construction of a 100-bed hospital in Moyamba, highlighting the government’s continued efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure across the country.
The visit, which included senior ministry officials, engineers, and local authorities, focused on assessing the progress and quality of work at the site. Key areas inspected included patient wards, the operating theatre, maternity unit, intensive care unit (ICU), mortuary, and other essential service sections of the facility.
According to officials, the inspection forms part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation to ensure that new health facilities meet modern standards and are equipped to deliver efficient and reliable medical services.

During the tour, Dr. Demby provided technical input on several critical aspects of the hospital’s development. He emphasized the importance of installing properly engineered oxygen systems, particularly for the ICU and surgical theatre, noting their essential role in emergency and critical care.
He also underscored the need for sustainable water supply systems and dependable energy infrastructure to support uninterrupted service delivery.
In addition, the minister highlighted the value of involving frontline healthcare professionalssuch as surgeons and theatre nurses in the final design and planning stages. He noted that their practical experience can help ensure the facility is tailored to meet real-world clinical needs.
The hospital project in Moyamba is part of ongoing national initiatives aimed at expanding access to quality healthcare services, particularly in underserved areas.
Once completed, the facility is expected to improve service delivery capacity in the district and reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for specialized care.
Officials say continued monitoring and technical oversight will remain a priority as construction progresses, with the goal of delivering a functional and resilient healthcare facility for the community.
