A fire broke out at the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) of Makeni Regional Government Hospital in Bombali District in the early hours of Friday, 11th April 2025.
According to the Ministry of Health, there were no reports of human casualties, but the fire caused damage to the unit.
The Ministry reported that a team of senior staff members, led by the Deputy Chief Medical Officer in charge of Clinical Services, Dr. Mustapha Kabba, and the Director of Hospital and Ambulance Services, was dispatched to assess the extent of the damage and coordinate emergency relief efforts.
According to the Ministry, emergency response protocols were activated, and collaboration began with both national and international partners to find ways to address the situation.
The Ministry also stated that immediate plans were put in place to restore services at the SCBU. These include the temporary relocation of the unit to Holy Spirit Hospital in Makeni. Plans are currently underway to set up a makeshift SCBU within Makeni Regional Government Hospital within 48 hours to care for newborns who may need special attention.
The Ministry further noted that steps are being taken to improve emergency health preparedness and response across regional healthcare facilities, with a focus on safety for patients, health workers, and caregivers during crisis situations.
