Tragedy befalls the Eastern part of Freetown again as heavy rain fall floods the entire Brima Lane community. This happens following to the constant rain fall that hits almost the entire part of Freetown for hours around the evening hours to midnight on Friday 8th July 2022 to Saturday 9th July 2022 this morning that lasted for hours again.
Sierra Leone has for decades been designated as a natural disaster prone country, especially for floods and mudslides, which are deemed likely not only from the effects of climate change but more so from the massive deforestation of virgin forests around the Freetown peninsula.
On August 14th 2017, the country was struck with tragedy that still bring back painful memories whenever victims of the mudslide and flooding incident reflected their minds on it. This mudslide and flooding cost the lives of nearly 500 people and affected almost 6,000 living primarily in five of the most hard-hit communities and left hundreds missing.
For years now in Sierra Leone, many indigenes in the Municipality of Freetown have noticed when they will expect flooding in the most likely areas of flooding in Freetown. In the eastern part of Freetown, places like Kolbot, and people leaving in the slums by the sea know that, whenever they experience a heavy rain for complete five hours and most especially the danger zones areas, the tendencies of flooding increases. This is tagged as a result of water coming from all other places including community living up the hills to the main gutters of Kolbot.
With not too much of a surprise from hours of heavy rain fall that rained fr hours since yesterday evening till morning in the easter part of Freetown, the Brima Lane community has today experienced a flooding that prevents vehicles from plying the streets of the community and the neighbouring communities. This includes the destruction of properties of residents in the area.
