On March 2, 2026, the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) hosted a delegation of thirteen students and one lecturer from the School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University, New Jersey, USA. The meeting took place in the Commission’s Conference Room at Tower Hill, Freetown.
This interaction formed part of a study visit under the university’s course titled Sierra Leone Seminar: Exploring Post-War Reconstruction and Development, which focuses on the theory and practice of rebuilding institutions in post-conflict societies.
Commissioner Hassan Samba Yarjah, speaking on behalf of HRCSL, welcomed the team and emphasized the universality of human rights. He encouraged the students to freely ask relevant questions related to human rights issues during the session.

Executive Secretary Joseph Kamara provided an overview of the Commission’s establishment under an Act of Parliament in 2004, outlining its core mandate to protect and promote human rights in Sierra Leone.
He also detailed the organizational structure of the Commission, highlighting the functions of its various directorates and sharing examples of both local and international achievements.
When asked about the process of becoming a Commissioner, Commissioner Simitie Lavaly explained that candidates undergo nomination and shortlisting before their names are forwarded to the Attorney General’s office for an interview.

The engagement reflects HRCSL’s commitment to educating future leaders on human rights and institutional rebuilding, fostering a deeper understanding of Sierra Leone’s post-conflict recovery among international students.
