The Inspector General of Police (IGP), William Fayia Sellu, personally led a high-profile operation at the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary to remove illegal inhabitants and traders encroaching on the protected site.

The operation is part of efforts to reclaim the sanctuary, which is strictly designated for wildlife conservation, tourism, and educational visits. According to IGP Sellu, those targeted had received multiple warnings to vacate the premises prior to the enforcement action.

“The sanctuary and its surroundings are not meant for trading, house construction, or any form of illegal settlement,” IGP Sellu emphasized, noting that the exercise was necessary to preserve the natural habitat of the chimpanzees and protect Tacugama’s status as a key conservation and tourism site in Sierra Leone.

By personally heading the operation, the Inspector General highlighted the seriousness of the enforcement action and the government’s commitment to safeguarding protected areas from encroachment and unlawful activities.
